Xilinx ships first Virtex-6 FPGAs

Programmable Logic DesignLine

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Xilinx Inc. said Tuesday (March 31) it shipped the first Virtex-6 FPGAs.

According to Xilinx (San Jose), more than 700 customers representing 1,000 projects are engaged in an early access program around the company's concept of "targeted design platforms," announced in February.

The Virtex-6 family—with high-speed serial transceivers, power-saving technology and 40-nm architecture—is the foundation upon which Xilinx and third party vendors are developing tools and IP resources for systems developers and designers in a variety of markets, including communications, audio/visual and broadcast, industrial, test and measurement, medical and military, according to Xilinx.

The Virtex-6 and Spartan-6 claim a capacity of 760,000 logic cells and are said to lower the costs and power consumption of systems.

Xilinx did not provide pricing information, saying it was available for Virtex-6 FPGAs through the company's sales offices and distributors. Xilinx
